The healthcare industry is booming throughout the nation, especially as a result of Obama’s healthcare reform measures. Nurses, doctors, and other healthcare-related professionals are being hired in droves.
There’s one sector of the healthcare industry that operates more behind the scenes, but is still an essential aspect of it:
Medical coding.
Many people don’t realize that coding is part of everything a hospital, doctor’s office, clinic, or other healthcare facility does. It’s how data is recorded about every aspect of the patient experience.
It allows organizations to synthesize their data, figure out what’s going well and what could be improved, and be compared to similar organizations.
In terms of Medicaid and Medicare, medical coding is the primary way the government determines how much money to give to healthcare organizations for patients’ care.
In a nutshell, medical coding is everything.
On another note, work/life balance is everything, too. Anyone can feel that uneasiness that comes on when their work/life balance is out of whack, and the peace that comes from living on their own terms.
In an effort to strike the balance, many people choose to work from home online. But there are a limited number of these jobs available, and as much as someone would like to work from home in an ideal scenario, it’s often not possible.
It’s not like a doctor could perform surgery from his home office, or a nurse could change a patient’s bandages. But a medical coder can easily work from home. All that’s needed is a quiet place to work, a computer and internet connection, and voilá! Work/life balance is within reach.
But isn’t working from home a step back from working in a downtown office? Isn’t there some kind of social stigma about it, and don’t those who work from home earn less than commuters?
Actually, no, there isn’t any social stigma—for instance if someone who works from home full time mentions it a party, in response there’s often a sigh and the words, “man, I wish I could do that!”
But yes, often those who work from home earn less than their commuting counterparts, but when you factor in the expense of commuting—tolls, gas, car wear-and-tear, time missed at home while stuck in traffic—and the expense of office life—expensive lunches out, professional wardrobe, overtime, etc.—many people find that the benefits outweigh the costs.
HCC Coders is an excellent coding company to work for, as all of our employees work from home, so everyone is treated with the utmost respect and courtesy. There’s no hierarchy of commuters and work-at-homers, like in many companies.
