Why Coding Matters in 2015

There’s been a resurging debate among educators and government officials about the importance of computer science—specifically, coding. Why?

The world depends on coding, though most don’t know that yet

Why Coding Matters in 2015	Many people, perhaps even the majority, don’t realize that coding is powering all of our electronic devices, and that it’s a fascinating skill to have that allows people to solve complex problems.
Interest in coding continues to lag among young people, particularly girls and certain minority groups. What would it take to open their eyes to the wonders of coding?
Some people say that it’s just like any other interest—so start them early. Various schools have adapted coding into teaching other subjects, such as foreign languages, art, and English.

Foreign language applications

For example, according to this Slate article published on April 15, St. Anne’s-Belfied School in Charlotteville, Virginia is incorporating coding into it fifth-grade Spanish class by teaching kids how to program computers to make bilingual, animated photo albums. How fun does that sound?! It’s definitely not the boring, repetitive ones and zeros most people think of when they think about what coding entails.

Learning through hands-on experience

Coding is also a great outlet for people who prefer to learn in a hands-on way. Instead of writing an essay or preparing a PowerPoint presentation to nervously deliver in front of classmates, students could use coding programs like Scratch to create interactive media. All the while, students are learning computational thinking, which is all about proactive problem solving, creativity, collaboration, and trial-and-error persistence.

Ushering in a revolution

Coding opens a door to endlessly interesting learning opportunities. As kids learn more and more about coding, they will continue to usher in the technological revolution that has been occurring for the past 20+ years.
There’s no doubt, coding is an essential skill now and will be even more so in the future.
