Medical records and health information technicians like HCC coders are in high demand

Health Information Job Opportunities Projected to Grow 21 PercentAccording to the 2012-2013 Occupational Outlook Handbook from the US Bureau of Labor Statistics, the health care industry is a very good place to be for individuals who value the job security and opportunities for advancement offered by a growing industry. Nine of the top 20 fastest-growing occupations for 2010-2020 are related to health care, and jobs for medical records and health information technicians are projected to grow by 21 percent during this same period.

Industry Trends

One of the primary reasons behind the growth of the health care sector is the fact that America now has an aging population. Baby boomers are entering retirement and as they begin to experience more problems associated with aging, the demand for health care services is expected to increase. There will be more patients getting medical tests, treatments, and procedures done, and therefore a greater volume of reimbursement requests from private and public insurance, including Medicare Advantage. Numerous chart abstraction services will be required to cope with this increased volume of health care activity, and of course HCC coding activities will become particularly important as they relate to the Medicare Advantage program that will be utilized by many aging Americans.

Get Certified

The best way to take advantage of this increased demand for coding services is by becoming a certified coder. The Bureau of Labor Statistics mentions that individuals with certifications will have the best job prospects. Several different types of medical billing and coding certifications are available through community colleges as well as through the American Health Information Management Association (AHIMA) and the American Academy of Professional Coders.
