A recent study conducted by computer science students and publicized by The Week magazine noted that across 10 programming languages, women are considered better coders. The findings were presented after the examination of 3 million pull requests, or contributions to projects, on GitHub. GitHub, a San Francisco-based company, is one of the largest open-source software communities in the world. The researchers found that code written by women was accepted at a rate of 78.6% as opposed to men’s 74.6%, according to this article by The Week.
However, while these findings are encouraging to women coders, there is a disappointing catch, according to this The Guardian article. Coding women did was only accepted more than men’s if their GitHub profiles were gender neutral, so they didn’t reveal that they were women. Women’s profiles that clearly showed that they were women resulted in their coding work being accepted at lower rates than men.
Dealing with gender bias
